Green Card Applicants Can Now Apply for a Social Security Number within the Same Application
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced that immigrants who are applying for a United States green card are now able to apply for a Social Security number or replacement card within the same application. This was previously a separate application at the Social Security office. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services has officially updated Form I-485 to include additional questions. This form is the Application for Adjustment of Status and the additional questions are as follows:
Has the Social Security Administration ever officially issued a Social Security card to you? and Do you want the SSA to issue a Social Security card?
The filing fee for Form I-485 remaining the same amount which is currently $1,225.
Until October 13, 2021, applicants will be permitted to submit the new or previous Application for Adjustment of Status form. After October 13, 2021, all applicants will need to submit the updated version of Form I-485.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Director, Ur M. Jaddou said in a statement, “This expansion of our partnership with the Social Security Administration illustrates our commitment to operating our nation’s immigration system more efficiently to save applicants time. Eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy and optimizing collaboration across public-serving agencies is a key priority for this agency and the Biden-Harris administration.”
When an applicant’s Form I-485 is approved by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Social Security Administration will issue the applicant a Social Security number or replacement card.
